Methodology: how the DeFi Score and the 14-day forecast work

DeFi Garden Research 路 Last updated October 25, 2026 路 Education, not financial advice.

DeFi Garden gives every scored DeFi yield a DeFi Score from 0 to 100 and a 14-day forecast range for its rate. This page explains what the score reflects, what the safeguards are, where the data comes from and where the method is weak. It describes the what, not the recipe: the exact weights, thresholds and model internals are proprietary.

Not a credit rating. The AAA, AA, A, BBB and HIGH RISK bands are DeFi Garden's own model output. They are not a credit rating issued by a registered credit rating agency, and they are not a statement about default probability or about a protocol's security.

1. What the DeFi Score is

The DeFi Score is a number from 0 to 100 that summarizes the quality of a pool's yield: how stable the rate is expected to be, how much of it comes from organic fees rather than temporary incentives, whether deposits are expected to stay, and how easy it is to get out. Higher is better.

It is a yield-quality score, not a safety audit. No smart-contract audit, exploit history, oracle design, admin-key, governance, collateral or curator-risk information goes into it. A pool with a flat, organic, deep yield can score high and still be exploited. Pool pages carry the same note.

2. What it reflects

The score combines four pillars. Each pillar is a different question about the yield.

PillarWhat it reflects
Yield stabilityHow steady the rate is expected to be over the forecast window, and how much room there is for it to fall.
SustainabilityHow much of the yield comes from organic fees rather than temporary reward incentives, and where the rate is heading.
Capital stickinessWhether deposits are expected to stay in the pool rather than leave.
Exit liquidityHow deep the pool is, and so how easily a position can be withdrawn.

Most of the score depends on the forecast, so the quality of the forecast matters to the score; see Limitations.

3. The bands

The DeFi Score maps to five bands, from strongest to weakest: AAA, AA, A, BBB and HIGH RISK. The bands are DeFi Garden's own model output. They are not a credit rating issued by a registered credit rating agency, and we do not claim they correspond to default or loss probabilities.

4. The 14-day forecast

5. Data source

Pools, APY, TVL and the base and reward split come from the DefiLlama yields API. We do not re-measure them on-chain. DeFi Garden also keeps its own daily history of pool rates and TVL.

6. Trust rails

These safeguards apply to what DeFi Garden displays and are never relaxed to make a number look better.

7. How accuracy is checked

Forecasts are compared with what actually happened, and the results are published on one page: /forecast-accuracy.

8. Coverage

The aim is to score every DeFi pool that has a yield and at least $100K in TVL on DefiLlama: lending markets, vaults, staking, liquidity pools, tokenized real-world assets and more. A pool receives a score and forecast only if it clears the TVL floor and has enough history; pools without enough history have no score, and we show none rather than guessing. The set is refreshed by the daily build. Scores are available on the scored pool pages and through the API.

10. Education, not financial advice

DeFi Garden is an educational analytics tool. Scores, bands and forecasts are model outputs about yield quality, not recommendations to buy, sell or deposit, and not a guarantee of future rates or of safety. DeFi carries a risk of total loss. Do your own research and never deposit more than you can afford to lose. The AAA to HIGH RISK bands are not a credit rating issued by a registered credit rating agency.
